Reaction: Negative OR Positive?

Google Image
Scenario:

Two boys raised in the same home by an alcoholic father. When grown they each went their own way, one became an alcoholic and the other a teetotaller. One was asked, "Why did you become an alcoholic?" The other was asked, "Why did you become a teetotaller:" Each of the men answered this question in the same way, "What else could you expect when you had a father like mine?"

Stuff happens, good and bad. We have the power and control to decide how we wish to react to these situations. It is easier to make sound judgements when you have been given a good start with a loving, caring family however there is still no guarantee that these kids will become model citizens. They too have a choice to make in how they are going to live their life.

When growing up in a poor home life there is still the choice to; feel sorry for ourselves, blame others, live life without a goal or purpose or you can forgive the parents, love them just because God gave them to you to honour, respect and obey. The choice is ours to make we can look at our cup half empty or half full. The cup and the liquid does not change it is our approach that makes the world of difference.

Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to who we must give account.

It is very difficult to honour a mother or father who is an alcoholic, an abuser, or an abandoning parent but the best way we can honour such a parent is to not let our past direct our future. What a great honour it would be for parents if our children would rise above their early setbacks and invest their lives in doing what is right and good for others.

Matthew 7:13-14 NIV
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few fine it."

We all have "stuff" to deal with but it is how we look at this "stuff" that makes the world of difference. Here is a song by Paul Overstreet called 'Dig Another Well'. This kind of sums up this whole post. Enjoy!!

  1. I totally agree CPR. Parents can rise their children with foundational Christian truths, but each one of us must may a personal decision for Christ and descipleship. And we must never give up on people because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23), so we do not know who the Holy Spirit is working in to bring to a saving faith in Jesus. The secular world is truly empty, but always full of potential for salvation. And a transformed heart is a changed person, with the light of Christ leading their life. Boy, if that isn't half full reality, i don't know what is. Great post because it clearly shines the light of godly truth. Blessings.

  2. Hi Brian,
I know a few pastor's kids and they sure are not living a Christ centered life. It really is, when you get passed all of the 'stuff', a choice that we al have to make. Do we choose to listen to that voice that says, "no, don't do that" or do we listen to the voice that says, "go ahead no one will know".
I am so thankful that we have the Holy Spirit here guiding and helping us. Even people who were raised in poor conditions can hear this voice and have the freedom to choose how they wish to react.

  5. Hi Child of GOD -

I much enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.

There is much wisdom contained in those "glasses."

In particular, I latched on to this that you expressed, "The cup and the liquid does not change it is our approach that makes the world of difference."

  6. Hi Sandra,
It was my mom's saying, depending on how you look at your cup that will determine your outlook on life and how you will handle things.
