John 15:5-8 NIV
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."
Just like a tree if the branches stay rooted to the tree they will grow and produce fruit which brings life to those who eat it. If that branch is diseased, by say a worm, then that branch will wither, die and fall away from the tree. So it is with us, if we allow sin to come in and we don't get rid of that sin then it will destroy our foundation in Christ and we will wither up and fall away from our secure foundation. But if we repent of that sin and and keep our heart pure in Him, then when we pray and ask of the Father what lays on our heart, He will hear us and give it to us, but only if it will glorify Him by bringing more souls into His Kingdom.
