Mesothelioma Awareness

Romans 12:12 ESV
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

September is cancer awareness month, and September 26 is Mesothelioma Cancer Awareness Day.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that can be brought on by exposure to asbestos and it is 100%

PREVENTABLE!

Mesothelioma: a cancer of mesothelial tissue, associated especially with exposure to asbestos.

Doctors understand that exposure to asbestos cause cancerous cells to grow in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Even though treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or in some cases surgery, mesothelioma has a poor prognosis. Having this understanding and knowledge the best offense is a good defense and that is awareness.

There are only about 3,000 people a year diagnosed in the United States and with this minimum it is difficult to run the type of research needed to determine the best therapy needed to fight each stage of growth. Spreading awareness is key in advancing research and subsequently a cure.

This cancer is more common in men over the age of 60 who have been working in jobs linked with asbestos, but there are women and children who have secondary exposure to asbestos which has been carried on the clothing or body of the working men.

Mesothelioma is difficult to identify as the indicators look a lot like other respiratory disorders which include chest pain, chronic cough, discharges of the chest and abdomen and the presence of blood in lung fluid.

Although this cancer, with a 10 month survival, seems hopeless to treat there is a survivor who is sharing her story, experience and wisdom with other victims. Heather Von St. James, has been 8 years as a mesothelioma survivor and she is honoured to share her story with you. Listen to her short video and spread the word.

Proverbs 23:18 ESV
Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
